He is known for hit songs like "Peggy Sue" and "That'll Be the Day". 

Holly's music, inspired by Elvis Presley, helped shape the rock and roll genre and influenced many artists, including The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. 

He tragically died in a plane crash in 1959, an event famously memorialized as "the day the music died" in Don McLean's song "American Pie".
