Description
Vintage Japanese Ikebana Basket Woven Bamboo Hanakago Boho Decor Antique
This is a beautifully hand-woven antique Japanese Ikebana basket (Hanakago), likely dating from the early to mid-20th century.
The basket features a robust, oval-shaped body meticulously hand-crafted from split bamboo. The weave is a classic herringbone or horizontal chevron pattern, showcasing a deep, rich mahogany patina that highlights its age and artisanal quality.
Handle: A defining feature is the high, sculptural arch handle. It is constructed from multiple thick bamboo strips that are bound together at the top and base with traditional rattan ties, creating a striking silhouette.
Condition & Detail: The basket shows a natural, aged finish characteristic of authentic vintage pieces. The rim is reinforced with a thick bamboo band for structural integrity.
Traditionally these baskets were primarily used for Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arrangement. In a traditional setting, a bamboo or metal tube (called an otosh) would be placed inside to hold water for seasonal flowers or branches, allowing the arrangement to "breathe" within the organic texture of the basket.
While the craftsmanship strongly points to Japanese origin, similar styles were also produced in the Philippines (such as Labba baskets) and China for market or farm use.
However, the specific handle construction and refined weave on this piece are hallmarks of Japanese bamboo art.
